As a Bhakti yogini, leading and participating in kirtan is central to my personal practice. My friend and kirtan wali, Beth Ann Schroeder defines kirtan beautifully:

Kirtan, or call and response chanting, comes from the path of yoga called Bhakti—the Yoga of Unconditional Love. When we chant the sacred names of the divine, we tap into this Bhakti, which is our own true nature—love.

By chanting in a group setting, we can help heal our own hearts and also send the seeds of healing into the world through our collective voices. In essence, by practicing Bhakti Yoga, we help to bring all beings into a state of love—a state of Bhakti—as we merge our voices and hearts together!
